JEFFERY ANGLES

Jeffrey Angles is a professor of Japanese literature at Western Michigan University who has won numerous prizes for his work translating Japanese literature into English. One of his special interests is mystery, adventure, and science fiction writing, especially that related to monsters, ghosts, yokai, and kaiju.

He has translated two foundational kaiju novels by Shigeru Kayama — the same science fiction author who wrote the first draft of the screenplays for the first two Shōwa-era Godzilla films: Godzilla and Godzilla Raids Again (University of Minnesota Press, 2023). These are the first official English editions of the classic stories that launched the King of the Monsters. He has also translated The Luminous Fairies and Mothra, the original literary source that introduced Mothra.

Angles includes detailed afterwords in both books that explore the cultural, anti-nuclear, and historical context behind the tales. He will be signing copies of Godzilla and Godzilla Raids Again and The Luminous Fairies and Mothra at G-FEST this year.

A longtime favorite at G-FEST, his work has given fans deeper insight into the literary roots of the King of the Monsters and beyond.
